The Endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a naturally occurring biological system. The ECS performs differently in each part of the body, but its main function is homeostasis. The ECS is part of a system that is composed of receptors, which directly respond to stimuli in our environment.
The ECS increases and decreases activity throughout the day, and can learn from our habits and routines. All of us are born with an endocannabinoid system, it is not just something for the cannabis smokers!
The endocannabinoid receptors in your brain that help the ECS function are called CB1 and CB2. These receptors bind to endocannabinoids, molecules produced by your body. Endocannabinoids can bind to either CB1 or CB2, and depending on the effect and response your body has, it will choose differently. CB1 receptors relate to appetite, memory and pain, while CB2 receptors most commonly relieve inflammation. The endocannabinoid system is still being studied, and based on our current understanding it holds great promise. It can aid with many different functions and processes, such as:
Memory and learning
These are just a few of its many functions. The ECS has great medical potential, and can possibly aid in the treatment of various diseases and illnesses!
