Cannabis is a genus of a plant in the Cannabaceae family. Within the Cannabis genus, there are many different species, but the three primary species are Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis. Though Hemp and marijuana are often referred to as a species of Cannabis, they actually aren’t.
Hemp has been generally used to describe the non-intoxicating Cannabis varieties, harvested for industrial use such as textiles, paper, foods, skin care, and even building materials. It’s has 0.3% or less THC, which is the compound that induces psychotropic and euphoric effects on the user.
Whereas Marijuana is the Cannabis varieties that contain more than 0.3% THC. In fact, Marijuana can contain up to 30% THC. Both Hemp and Marijuana can produce high amounts of another popular compound called CBD, which is known for their therapeutic benefits.
The key difference between Hemp and Marijuana is the different level of THC compound, and the terms are adopted to represent their different uses. They are derived from the Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis species, bred to produce different levels of THC and CBD.
